Today’s Action: Stop Kavanaugh’s Judiciary Committee Vote
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) are pushing to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s nominee for Supreme Court, as fast as possible. With confirmation hearings concluded, Kavanaugh now moves to a committee vote, where Democrats have delayed Republicans as long as the rules allow them to. The committee vote is set for this Thursday, September 20.
But it’s not over yet. Kavanaugh was already the most scandal plagued Supreme Court nominee in U.S. history. Then, Christine Blasey Ford has passed a lie detector test over allegations that Kavanaugh tried to rape her in high school.
This is just one spectre from Kavanagh’s past…as only 7% of his total documentation has been released for review, including an unprecedented hundreds of thousands of Bush-era documents held back by Trump to deceive the public about the true record of this would-be lifetime Justice.
Senate Republicans aren’t *simply* being belligerent and short-sighted. They’re risking half-a-century of judicial influence over a nominee with an unexamined history — brought in by president under investigation for his murky campaign proceedings. We must demand the members of the Committee delay a vote on Kavanaugh until his record — including sexual assault accusations — has been examined.
Check to see if your Senators are on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and if so, email or call them to demand they delay and vote down Kavanaugh for Supreme Court. Neither Senator on the Committee? Email or call them and demand that they halt any further nomination proceedings until we know who this man really is.
If you had doubts about Kavanaugh before (and you really really should), his confirmation hearings only made things worse. In four days, we learned that Kavanaugh misled the Senate under oath in 2004, referred to birth control as “abortion-inducing drugs,” and lied when he claimed ignorance of stolen emails during his time in the Bush administration — also under oath.
And, it’s obvious why he’s Trump’s choice: Kavanaugh does not believe a president should be subject to criminal investigation while in office…which is exactly what Trump is facing right now under Mueller. Just Trump’s overt attempt to obstruct justice with a Justice should be reason enough to vote down Kavanaugh.
Save SCOTUS. Save us all. Starting with the Committee.
Check the Senate Judiciary Committee roster to see if your Senators are members, and then email or call (202.224.3121) them to demand they delay and vote down Kavanaugh for Supreme Court. If neither of your Senators are on the Committee, email or call to demand they work to cease all further nomination proceedings until the public finds out who Brett Kavanaugh really is.
