Today’s Action: Fight GOP voter suppression by electing a new Democratic Secretary of State in Georgia!
Midterms in Georgia thrust the crusty underbelly of GOP voter suppression in Georgia into the national spotlight. Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp tossed and lost thousands of ballots in primarily Black districts. And, Kemp did it while running for Governor, cheating and scamming his way to victory by silencing those who would have voted against him.
Here’s the silver lining: with Kemp’s win for Governor, Georgia now faces a runoff election for the new Secretary of State on December 4. A Republican will most definitely carry on Kemp’s vile practices…but securing a win for Democratic candidate John Barrow could be a game-changer. With GOP voter suppression removed, Black communities could finally get their constitutional voice and Georgia could even turn blue in 2020.
Barrow was a Democrat in the U.S. House for ten years and voted against voter suppression policies such as a required photo I.D.
But the Republican candidate is running a Trump copycat, actively and vocally pushing for stricter and harsher voter list scrubbing — a thinly-veiled euphemism for ridding the list of people of color, the poor, and the elderly, even more than his predecessor.
Please help the disenfranchised voters of Georgia make their voices heard in this vital election between now and December 4 to elect John Barrow — because it’s only going to get harder for Georgians to make their voices heard without a Democrat in office the next four years.
PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition telling states to arrest the vigilantes moved to violence by Trump’s anti-immigrant fervor, and check out the brilliant “Don’t Think of an Elephant” by George Lakoff — a quick read that contains the ultimate keys for Democrats to win elections — and arguments.
