Today’s Action: Tell Congress to support the Green New Deal

According to the U.N., the effects of global warming could be irreversible by 2030 if not rapidly checked. Meanwhile, our president pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord last year and has encouraged polluters, exacerbating climate change.

But Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY and “AOC” in social media) and Sen. Ed Markley have made waves by introducing the Green New Deal, a framework of goals and principles to confront climate change head-on while tackling America’s rampant income inequality. The resolution sets the stage for the 2020 presidential elections and beyond — and it should!

Check to see whether your Representatives and Senators have co-sponsored the Green New Deal yet. If they have, thank them. If they haven’t, tell them to get on it ASAP, because Earth and her inhabitants are literally running out of time.

The Green New Deal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition the United States to 100% renewable energy sources in a decade (we’re currently at 11%).

And it goes beyond that: creating new jobs (including solar power panel installation and manufacturing electric cars) and advocating for universal healthcare and basic living income.

It’s an incredible package that the entire planet and all her inhabitants need to survive….but we’ll be playing the long game with our current leadership. Our first big step is championing it in the House and advocating for it in the Senate, thereby guaranteeing its spot front and center in the 2020 elections (because a few Democrats *also* need a reminder).
