Today’s Action: Don’t let Republicans gut Obama’s protections from banks
It’s hard to forget the 2008 financial crisis — America’s worst economic collapse since the Great Depression. Hard to forget the crashing stock market and entire neighborhoods of foreclosed homes brought on by irresponsible loaning practices by big banks.
That is to say, hard to forget unless you serve in this Republican Congress.
A bill has already passed the House that would gut President Obama’s “Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act,” which enforced badly-needed protections against reckless investments by big banks.
The bill now lives in the Senate and would remove restrictions on any bank smaller than $250 billion — two dozen big banks that collectively received $47 billion in bailout funds in the 2008 crisis. This would make it easier for them to return to the reckless and predatory practices that caused the great recession in the first place.
While a handful of bankers and Republican donors will get richer if this bill becomes law, it would be devastating to America’s economic future and must be stopped.
Call or email your Senators and demand their opposition to the so-called “Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.” Tell them we cannot allow wealthy bankers to run roughshod over the rest of us.
A rollback of Dodd-Frank not only would put us at great risk for another financial meltdown, but would dangerously erode consumer protection from predatory lending and racial discrimination.
While strong progressives like Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) have expressed outrage over the bill, some more moderate Democrats are planning to support the measure — so it’s all the more important that we get to work now and make clear that we find this dangerous legislation unacceptable.
