Hope…

Seriously?

Yes. Seriously.

Today’s Action: Pass the HEROES Act without watering it down

Two months ago, the House passed the HEROES Act, the $3 trillion Democratic response to our current needs in facing the pandemic. After stalling for two months, Senate Republicans are finally coming to the table because, surprise, the virus and our economy have only gotten drastically worse over that time.

But Republicans are determined to make this package as inept as possible, with goals of cutting it to $1 trillion, discontinuing the $600 increase to unemployment insurance that has kept millions of families afloat the past few months, cutting investments in the BICOP communities that have been hit hardest, opening schools against expert recommendation, and incentivizing returning to work even as many states are in their second round of shutdown.

Meanwhile, we’ve passed the 140,000 mark. They are killing us.

Call or email your Senators (including Democrats) and demand they pass the HEROES Act as-written, without watering it down. And tell them YOUR priorities: election safety, stimulus checks and unemployment assistance, boosted testing and contact tracing, housing security, small business support, and more.

So what’s in the HEROES Act? The Democrats’ plan would provide $1 trillion in funding for state and local governments, a second stimulus check for households (including immigrants), funding for the United States Postal Service, moratoriums on evictions, and $200 billion in hazard pay for essential workers. It also includes $3.6 billion to fund a national option to vote-by-mail and boosted in-person safety measures for this November’s election.

And that last line item is especially important if we actually want the ability to vote Trump out this November. Trump has spent months spreading misinformation about mail-in-ballots to discredit and block a national absentee ballot plan. And we’ve seen a preview of the poll madness that awaits us if Congress doesn’t approve a comprehensive election-safety plan for November – unsafe conditions, polling locations shut down in Democratic-leading counties, and ballots never appearing for thousands of Black voters.

We’re facing a public health, civil rights, and economic crisis all in one fell swoop. And the HEROES Act is our best chance through this mess until we vote in a new president this November.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators, regardless of their party, urge them to pass the HEROES Act as-written, and share the top 2-3 items you care about the most.

Help get out the vote this November by signing up for Indivisible’s text-bank training session TONIGHT or Tuesday, July 28th!
