The furniture business Wayfair has been under the spotlight, and not in a good way: they’ve been selling beds to the Trump Administration to hold children imprisoned by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). If you shop there, stop now – and let them know why you’re doing it via Twitter (use the hashtag #WayfairWalkout)!
ICE, Trump’s arm for enforcing his policy of hate at the border, depends on many businesses to maintain their reign of terror. From Amazon to Microsoft, Comcast to Dell, Century Link to Chase Bank, Salesforce to Johns Hopkins University, DOZENS of our household names are currently profiting off of child prisons…and they need to hear from us.
Our political activism doesn’t just live with our elected leaders. We live in a capitalist society, which means we have the ability to influence policy with our wallets when our voices aren’t being respected. And in fact, our wallets can be just as strong as our votes.
With another year and a half of Trump coupled with Mitch McConnell’s stronghold in the Senate, we’re going to be need to be creative with how we continue to fight back…and that might mean switching your bank or cable company (let them know WHY), or urging your place of employment to drop their relationship with certain tech companies to make a big impact.
Unfortunately, most corporations will go wherever the money is — regardless of any moral calamity. That’s why we need to make sure that aligning with Trump’s cruel actions costs them money. We have that power and a moral obligation to use it.
