Today’s Action: Pass the Postal Service Reform Act!

A widely supported, bipartisan bill to overhaul and modernize the United States Postal Service has been stalled by Republican Sen. Rick Scott over a supposed “minor clerical error.” Now that the historic vote has been blocked, it’s likely that the bill’s passage will be delayed until March.

The badly needed legislation will help stabilize the USPS financially, saving more than $25 billion over a decade, and finally address some of the glaring problems preventing the postal service from evolving into the 21st century.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, hoping to get the bill to Biden’s desk by the end of the week, said “we will pass this bill because Americans need it.”

Call (202-224-3121) or write your senators and tell them to stop at nothing to pass the Postal Service Reform Act!

A spokesperson for Schumer commented on the development best when they said “Senate Republicans keep saying they want bipartisanship, but one of their leaders is standing in the way of the Senate from taking action this week on historic, bipartisan Postal Service reform.” They continued, “it is time for Senate Republicans to practice what they preach and rein in reckless Rick Scott’s political games so we can pass bipartisan legislation.”

Overhauling the USPS is long overdue and supported by both parties — its delay is a major disappointment.

Call (202-224-3121) or write your senators and demand they fight to get the Postal Service Reform Act to Biden’s desk without further delay!

Today’s Action: For Black History/Futures Month, we demand the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act!

It’s been almost two years since Black medical worker Breonna Taylor was murdered when Louisville police burst into the wrong apartment and blindly opened fire. Despite the tragedy sparking months of furious protests, a bill that would ban no-knock warrants, the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act, has never been brought to a vote by Congress.

On February 2nd, Amir Locke was shot dead on the couch by the Minneapolis PD during a no-knock warrant raid. Neither Taylor nor Locke were the targets of the raids but still lost their lives after being startled in the middle of the night by unannounced trigger-happy police.

Call (202.224.3121) or email your Members of Congress to demand they bring the Justice for Breonna Taylor Act to a vote!

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced the legislation soon after her murder, but it wasn’t even brought out of committee. Congressional action two years ago could have helped prevent the death of Amir Locke, but instead yet another Black man has been lost to police brutality – and the whole system is guilty.

No-knock warrants are unnecessarily dangerous for everyone involved. American police have a deep-rooted culture of shooting first, asking later – especially when Black people are involved. The only proper response to Amir Locke’s passing is one that includes banning no-knock warrants.

Call (202.224.3121) or email your Members of Congress and tell them an immediate ban on no-knock warrants is necessary in the fight for racial equity!

Today’s Action: Pass climate legislation now!

The past few years have produced severe, record-breaking weather events that are only getting worse. Last week, an ice storm wreaked havoc from Texas to Ohio, leaving over 300,000 people without power. Warm, unstable air in the southeast caused a massive tornado — in February — in Alabama, injuring 8 and killing one.

2021 yielded some of the worst droughts since record-keeping began well over a century ago. This, along with other climate change factors, such as reduced snowpack and warmer temperatures, caused the wildfire season to advance significantly. Flash flooding tanked major infrastructure in New York City. Videos surfaced of working-class and impoverished New Yorkers attempting to wade through waist-high sewage water just to get into the Subway, some wearing garbage bags around their legs. If our legislators continue to ignore and evade critical environmental issues, these severe weather patterns only promise to become the norm. Flash flooding, droughts, wildfires, failing infrastructure, pandemics — all symptoms of a sick planet.

Call (202-224-3121) or email your representatives and tell them to pass a comprehensive climate plan now.

This issue goes beyond party lines. Our legislators must come together to ensure the United States is doing everything in its power to reverse the damage done to our planet by decades of rampant, natural resource exploitation.

To be clear, It is not the wealthy that will suffer most from these devastations — that burden will largely be shouldered by working-class families and marginalized communities. When life becomes untenable for the majority of the population, the ultra-rich will retreat to luxury bunkers that have been in the works for years.

Call (202-224-3121) or email your representatives and demand they prioritize climate action and pass meaningful climate initiatives! Remind them that the future of Earth depends on it.

Today’s Action: End — really end — US support for the war in Yemen

The Saudi-led war in Yemen is a horrifying humanitarian catastrophe from top to bottom. Saudi pilots, using American planes and American missiles, have bombed weddings, hospitals, and school buses full of children. Since 2015, at least 13,000 civilians have been killed in the fighting while a hundred thousand more have starved to death as a Saudi blockade-induced famine pushes millions more innocent Yemenis to the brink.

Last month, Saudi Arabian airstrikes knocked out the internet for the entire country of Yemen, killed at least 70 people — including three children who were playing soccer on a nearby field — and injured nearly 160 more. It’s been almost a year since President Biden vowed to end US support for Saudi Arabia’s brutal war in Yemen, and yet, US arm sales to the Saudis have quietly continued, including $650 million worth of missiles and missile launchers approved late last year. We need new action from our elected officials now to effectively end the United States’ support for the war in Yemen.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your members of Congress and demand they propose a new Yemen war powers resolution to stop and prohibit US participation in the war!

While some senators and representatives spoke out against the plan for the most recent arms sale, it’s clearly not enough. In 2018 and 2019, Congress voted to end US involvement in Yemen with a resolution put forward by Sen. Bernie Sanders. Though it had enough bipartisan support to pass through both the House and the Senate, then-President Trump vetoed the resolution.

President Biden announced last February that he would halt US support for the Saudi war in Yemen. But that glimmer of hope was quickly extinguished by the inevitable qualification that we would continue providing “defensive” support to the Saudis — which, according to the Pentagon, is much of what we already contribute (intelligence sharing, for example).

This latest war crime by Saudi Arabia is a grim reminder that we are still enabling a moral atrocity in the Middle East’s poorest country, and it’s past time we put a stop to it.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your members of Congress and demand they support and pass a new war powers resolution to end ALL US involvement in the Yemen war — no “defensive” strings attached.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to demand world leaders join President Biden in diplomatic boycotts of the Olympics for China’s human rights abuses, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Today’s Action: Ending the federal prohibition on cannabis!

While states like California and Oregon turned the legal cannabis industry into massive money makers, at least 40,000 people were still incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses last year.

The glaring racial disparities in marijuana-related arrests are well documented; a black person is anywhere from four (national average) to fifteen times more likely to be jailed for weed than a white person in our country.

The Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act would be a huge step towards resolving this injustice. Legalizing cannabis at a federal level and regulating it on a national level would open the door to granting freedom to nonviolent offenders, ending the war on drugs, and relieving an overburdened prison system.

Call (202.224.3121) or write your senators and call for their support of Schumer’s Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act!

On top of that, legalizing marijuana would eliminate social roadblocks for those ‘merely’ arrested or convicted for possession, which can lead to lost employment, ineligibility for public housing, suspended drivers licenses, and restrictions on student loans. These seemingly minor consequences are designed to heap needless hardship on people and keep our communities in chaos.

We’re long overdue for a national overhaul of marijuana laws, if only for how our government and police forces have weaponized it to target our most vulnerable and oppressed communities.

Call (202.224.3121) or write your senators to tell them to co-sponsor the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act!
