Today’s action: Save the date for October Democratic debates!

The fourth round of Democratic debates are coming up, and with Trump under impeachment investigation, it could not be more timely or vital to hear from those campaigning to face off against him in 2020.

The October debates will feature front-runners Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders alongside the other third debate participants, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, and Andrew Yang. For introductions to each, check out our OD Action candidate profiles! Plus, joining the stage after a hiatus from the September debates is Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and billionaire activist Tom Steyer makes his debate debut.

The November debates will have stricter qualification measurements – so the October debates may be several candidates’ last chance to shine. It’s critical we watch and pay close attention to examine each candidate at face value and really understand where they stand on progressive issues…because we want the best candidates to thrive!

Save the date for the Saturday, October 12 Democratic presidential candidate debate at 8 pm EST, hosted by CNN and The New York Times. Make it fun by hosting a watch-party with your friends and family!

We need a new president. But we don’t want just *any* new president. Just as the Great Depression opened up the doors for FDR and a generation of real progressive reforms, this new Trumpian rock bottom provides an opportunity to elect a president who will truly push America forward on issues like combating climate change, implementing a strong, compassionate imigration policy, valuing women’s and minority rights, enacting tax policies that expand opportunity and benefit the majority of American (not just billionaires and corporations), and so much more.

And just as importantly, we need voters who are fired up. We need Democrats who don’t *just* show up on Election Day (we need that, for sure), but who are also inspired to make phone calls, canvass for candidates, register voters, and donate to help push a Democratic president across the finish line next November.

All of this begins with watching the debates, which helps us sort out whom to rally behind and how we want to be involved. So gather your friends and a few snacks and beverages…and raise a glass to the 2020 election season.

Mark your calendar for the fourth Democratic presidential candidate debate, Saturday, October 12 at 8 pm, hosted by CNN and The New York Times. Send out an email today to invite your friends and family to join you for the debate!

Today’s Action: Tell the House to cancel recess to focus on impeachment

This has been a historic week. On Tuesday, thanks to the tireless efforts of activists and engaged voters around the country (including the OD Action community!), the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump.

The momentum to impeach has been building since early on in Trump’s presidency, with a seemingly endless string of legal and constitutional violations. But Trump’s urging of the Ukrainian president to assist him in destroying the reputation of possible pre-election opponent Joe Biden (and based on no evidence of wrongdoing) while withholding $391 million in military funding to Ukraine, followed by the Trump administration’s attempt to cover up the whistleblower who identified the violation, has been the final straw for even the most conservative of Democratic leadership…and that’s because the power of the people has been relentless in making our demands.

The House is set to leave for a two-week recess beginning this Monday, September 30, but this is too important to delay.

Call or email your Representative and urge them to cancel their upcoming Sept 30 – Oct 14 recess, which would remove them from impeachment progress for two weeks. And, join the events happening around the country to make this demand in person.

We have a long road ahead of us. The announcement to begin impeachment proceedings means the House will begin an investigation into Trump’s wrongdoings – but it is not a vote to impeach at this time. Additionally, if the vote passes the House, impeachment will need to pass through the Senate, we have an even greater uphill battle to gather the ⅔ vote to remove Trump from office.

We started down this path nearly three years ago, using all our courage, fire, and love for humanity under attack to fight against a man who singularly embodies hate and corruption. This victory is a stepping stone to celebrate, as well as a reminder to not fall into complacency until we have our real victory: removing Trump and his cronies from office, whether it be via impeachment or voting him out.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Representative and demand they cancel the House’s upcoming recess in order to immediately address the next steps of the impeachment process. Make your demands loud and clear by joining one of the events happening around the country!

Today’s Action: Tell Congress to expand background checks, pass red flag laws, and ban assault weapons

Every day, 100 Americans die from guns. Tragedy of this scale deserves an answer – yet time and time again, our leaders fail to act to save the lives that WILL be lost in the next shooting, and countless others that will live on with the grief of family members gone and communities scarred.

Months ago, the House passed legislation to create universal background checks for gun purchases. Since then, it has sat in the Senate as Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refuses to allow a vote, despite broad support from Americans across the political spectrum.

While McConnell stalls, Democrats continue to move forward, with “red flag” legislation to empower families and law enforcement to remove firearms from the hands of individuals at risk of harming themselves or others… an initiative widely backed by Democratic and Republican voters alike.

Call or email your Senators and demand they pass HR 8, the Background Checks Act of 2019. And, tell ALL of your Members of Congress to cosponsor and support red flag laws (H.R.3076/S.506) and pass a ban on assault weapons.

The August 31 mass shooting in Odessa, TX that killed seven and wounded 20 may well have been prevented by an improved background check system, as the shooter purchased his gun via private sale (no background check) after being blocked on a previous purchase for being deemed mentally unfit. A Washington State study found that 1-in-10 online gun purchases were made by individuals who would have been precluded from sales by background checks due to rape, domestic violence, and other charges.

Red flag laws, meanwhile, have shown to be effective at removing firearms from individuals at high suicide risk…victims of gun violence that receive far less news coverage, but are no less worthy of protection.

And high-capacity assault weapons? They simply have to go, as there is no purpose in their design beyond murdering large numbers of people. The Southerland Springs, TX shooter, who killed 25 at a church in 2017 with a semi-automatic, managed to fire more than 450 bullets during his attack.

#NotOneMore death by gun violence.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and tell them to pass HR 8, the Background Checks Act of 2019. Tell both your Senators AND your Representative to cosponsor and support red flag laws (H.R.3076/S.506) PLUS a ban on assault-style weapons.

Today’s Action: Restore voting rights to disenfranchised Americans

We’ve seen a crushing wave of GOP-led voter restriction in recent years, mainly targeting people of color, the poor, the elderly, and young people. The real springboard for these atrocities was in 2013, when the right-wing Supreme Court shut down key elements of the historic Voting Rights Act, originally signed into law in 1965. Without these protections, the GOP has quickly reverted back to repressive practices that pre-date the Civil Rights Era.

The Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019 would help to restore a key element lost from the original act: monitoring and tracking states with repeated offenses of voter suppression, and requiring federal oversight on any new voting law changes in those states.

And the momentum is building, particularly as we head into the upcoming primaries: this month, the House held hearings with prominent civil rights leaders on the voter discrimination that has built up in the time since the protections were lost. But while Congressional Democrats are onboard, Republicans need a push (or a shout) to get it across the finish line.

Call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to cosponsor and support the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019 (H.R.4 and S.561). Thank your Democratic leaders (House/Senate) who have already cosponsored, and ask them to move this vital legislation forward!

In the aftermath of the gutting of the Voter Rights Act, the GOP moved fast to target those who would vote against them:

  • Harsh voter I.D. laws that disproportionately affect voters of color and the poor
  • Consolidating polling stations, creating longer lines and inconvenient locations in minority areas
  • Purging voter rosters, forcing disenfranchised voters to re-register (and more likely, not vote at all)
  • Shortening early voting periods
  • ‘Missing’ ballots in majority-Black districts (hi, Georgia midterms)

These insidious tactics will be caught and corrected by the VRAA. For yourself, for your fellow voters, for those who cannot currently vote, and for the future of our democracy: call Congress.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand they support and cosponsor the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019 (H.R.4 and S.561). Be sure to check whether they’ve already cosponsored (House/Senate), so that you can thank them while you encourage them to aggressively move it forward.

Today’s Action: Demand stores implement a ban on firearms

In just over a month, we have experienced four mass shootings in our country:

  • the Gilroy Garlic Festival in CA, which left three dead and 12 wounded
  • a traffic light shooting spree in Odessa, TX, seven killed and 20 wounded
  • at a bar in Dayton, OH, nine killed and 27 wounded
  • at a Walmart in El Paso, TX, 22 killed and 26 wounded

41 dead by mass shooting, 85 wounded, in just over a month, not counting the thousands more deaths and injuries by gun violence that have occurred outside the headlines.

As we continue to fight for increased gun safety regulations with our federal and state leadership, there’s much more we can do to keep our public spaces safe: demand it from businesses as consumers.

Of the 30 largest retailers in the United States, only one – Costco – has an outright ban on firearms in stores. The rest either request that you do openly carry firearms (read: not an actual ban and not a peep about concealed carry) or have no official policy at all. Thus, our lives are in the hands of potential murderers choosing whether or not to follow a polite suggestion.

Browse the list below for stores you frequent. Contact those companies and tell them to put your safety first: anything less than an outright ban (like Costco) is unacceptable.

A request (not a ban) against open carry firearms:

Companies who have declared zero policy whatsoever:

Companies who have stayed absolutely silent:

Whether it’s your favorite grocery store, place to shop for back-to-school, or your local Starbucks, your safety – and not a friendship with the NRA – should be the highest priority. Contact the companies on the above list that affect your daily life the most, and tell them an outright ban on firearms is the only acceptable gun policy.

Today’s action: Tune in for the Democratic debate TONIGHT!

The third round of Democratic debates is here! Tonight, we’ll hear from the top ten candidates: front-runners Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren, plus Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, and Andrew Yang. For introductions to each, check out our OD Action candidate profiles!

The debate tonight only includes the top-performers – which means it’s a great chance for these candidates to deep-dive into issues. It’s critical we watch and pay close attention, to examine each candidate at face value and really understand where they stand on progressive issues…because we want the best candidates to thrive!

Tune in TONIGHT to the third round of Democratic debates at 8-11 pm EST/5-8 pm PST on ABC News, ABCNews.com, or streamed on Hulu Live, Facebook Watch, Twitter, Amazon Fire TV, AppleTV, YouTube, Apple News, or the Roku Channel. If you want to watch with fellow progressives, join a watch party (Indivisible)!

Tune in for the Democratic debates TONIGHT at 8-11 pm EST/5-8 pm PST on ABC News, ABCNews.com, or streamed on Hulu Live, Facebook Watch, Twitter, Amazon Fire TV, AppleTV, YouTube, Apple News, or the Roku Channel. Don’t watch alone – join a viewing party (Indivisible) near you!

Today’s Action: Stop Trump from denying citizenship to children of overseas Americans

Trump has been toying with eliminating birthright citizenship – the constitutional right of any person born on U.S. soil to be an American citizen – for a while now. And now he’s testing his idea.

A new policy, which is slated to go into effect in October, will deny automatic citizenship to children of overseas service members and government employees who fall into specific cases, affecting an estimated 20100 individuals per year. Diplomatic officers, military, missionaries…these families are looking at wildly increased costs, legal fees, travel arrangements and more to ensure their children will receive what was previously automatic.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand they move swiftly to oppose Trump’s chipping away at birthright citizenship for children of service members and government employees.

Why change policy that affects so few people and has no upside? Because Trump is testing the waters on broader citizenship rights, seeing how this adjustment will fare in the courts before he goes after larger groups that he wants to deny citizenship…a small change now that could have massive future implications if successful.

Birthright citizenship is a constitutional right, and we must battle hard to defend it now, before the reach of this violation can extend any further.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to elevate and outcry against this reduction in access to citizenship – remind them that, if it’s not stopped now, there will be more to come.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to stop Trump’s scheme to gut the Endangered Species Act, and check out the brilliant “Don’t Think of an Elephant” by George Lakoff — a quick read that contains the ultimate keys for Democrats to win elections — and arguments.

Today’s Action: Meet the candidates, part 8: Julián Castro

Next week’s Democratic presidential debate is set with ten candidates! We’re putting a spotlight on those who have made it to the third stage. We’ve already met Joe Biden, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Beto O’Rourke, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren, and today we’re introducing…

Julián Castro, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Castro was first a City Council Member at age 26 and then mayor of San Antonio, TX, until he left to serve as Obama’s youngest cabinet member as HUD Secretary. Castro has been considered a rising star in the Democratic party, and is the only Latino candidate in the race. However, he has struggled for broader public recognition since launching his campaign – strong enough to make the third round of debates, but not yet enough to be considered a front-runner.

Immigration: Castro’s primary focus has been immigration. He plans to decriminalize illegal border crossings (making it a civil rather than criminal offense), overhaul ICE, address the root causes of Central American migration, and remove local law enforcement’s authority to manhandle immigrants. And, his plan calls for more mainstream ideas as well: creating a path to citizenship for migrants and reversing Trump’s Muslim Ban.

Universal Pre-K: A flagship of his campaign, Castro is building off his successes with pre-kindergarten programs in San Antonio by promising universal, federally-funded pre-K for 3 and 4 year olds. His early education efforts are aimed at supporting not just students but also parents who otherwise could not afford childcare. He sees universal Pre-K as a particularly effective and valuable program for low-income families.

Police Reform: Castro’s stance on police reform includes restricting the use of deadly force and providing officer-to-officer accountability on excessive force, standardizing body cameras, reducing the school-to-prison pipeline by providing federal funding to schools for eliminating police officers in schools and providing bias training, and restricting other common policing activities (ex: shooting at moving cars, stop and frisk). And, he plans to ensure officers who have been fired over misconduct can’t simply be re-hired elsewhere.

Housing: As former Secretary of HUD, Castro has been expected to deliver detailed housing plans — and he has. He’s planning a massive expansion of the voucher program to ensure every eligible family in need of housing has access, including all families who make under 50% of the median area income. For renters, a tax credit for all who pay more than 30% of their income toward rent. And Castro plans to increase funding for new affordable housing construction by an additional $45 billion per year.

Critics say… he’s too close to Wall Street and sold tens of thousands of delinquent mortgages to banks while HUD Secretary under Obama – though he did change course after receiving pressure from progressives. It’s rumored to be the main reason he was considered and then passed on as Clinton’s running mate for 2016.

…and finally: Castro’s policies include the PAW Plan, strengthening protections and rights for both wild and domesticated animals, and his campaign website includes links to pet adoption. It’s super cute, TBH.

To read up on all of Julián Castro’s policies, visit his website! The next debate is September 12th. Save the date – and stay tuned for two more OD Action candidate profiles next week!
