Today’s Action: Tell Biden you want the most progressive student loan forgiveness plan!

The Biden Administration is now reviewing what steps the President can take to forgive student loan debt without Congressional approval (which we almost certainly won’t get unless the filibuster is eliminated). Many progressives and moderates have joined hands in asking Biden to grant $50,000/student in loan forgiveness, the minimum needed to properly address this issue.

And Biden needs the push. Because although he is interested in addressing this issue, his current plan for $10,000 per-student falls drastically short of the problem. But we can get to him by putting the pressure on our representatives.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them to push Biden to support generous student loan forgiveness of $50,000 per student.

“Working your way through college” isn’t the solution it used to be. In the past decade, the costs of attendance have risen 25-29%, though the federal minimum wage has not budged beyond $7.25 since 2009. We have an entire generation crushed under the weight of skyrocketing education costs, now struggling even harder due to the pandemic.

The $1.7 trillion student debt crisis is not a problem for the elite – it lands solidly on the shoulders of the 43 million middle and working class young people. And, students of color are disproportionately impacted, so much so that cancelling student loan debt has been called a major civil rights issue.

Forgiving student loan debt tackles an economic stimulus and institutionalized racial inequities in one go.

It’s a win/win situation…if we can convince the President to think big!

Email or call your Members of Congress and demand they push Biden to support $50,000-per-student debt forgiveness!

President Biden has announced a $2 trillion 8-year plan to answer his campaign promise to “Build Back Better” by improving infrastructure and shifting to green energy. We not only support it…we want to improve it.

Congressional progressives have introduced the THRIVE Agenda, a $10 trillion ten-year plan that goes above and beyond the Biden plan, transforming our country into a green machine and addressing racial economic disparities in tandem.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them that our recovery plan must be the THRIVE Agenda, and nothing less!

So what’s in it?

    • creates millions of well-paid, unionized, green jobs which replace our struggling infrastructure with green energy and transportation

  • boosts the ability for workers to unionize in currently low-wage industries

  • invests in public health in underserved communities

  • provides support and pay for millions of under/unpaid caregivers of the elderly and sick, and investing in childcare for families

  • modernizes homes to be more energy efficient

  • cleans up pollution and public lands

  • creates green and local opportunities for farmers and rural communities

  • transforms and invests in our industrial workforce to tackle green energy production needs

  • invests in communities of color and strengthening Native Nation sovereignty to ensure these policies support EVERYONE

Are you as excited as we are?

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them you approve of the THRIVE Agenda to rebuild our country. A $10 trillion investment in infrastructure, unionized jobs, and BIPOC communities, all while combating climate change, is exactly what we want!

Today’s Action: Take action the second week of Congressional recess!

We’ve got four more days of Congressional recess before our Members of Congress head back to D.C. This is the BEST TIME to make a big impact on the policies we want to see pass and improve in the coming months!

It may be too late to snag a one-on-one appointment, but other methods are just as or even more effective than a private meeting!

Take action with your Members of Congress this week before recess ends!

Choose your ask! Select ONE topic that your MoC needs to be pushed on:

Choose your strategy – 3 options!

  • Twitterstorm. Select a two-hour window during business hours to invite your community to join you in tweeting at your MoC with your chosen ask. Be sure to share the Twitter handle of your MoC and your preferred hashtags in advance.
  • Call Relay. Organize your community to call your MoC’s office with the same ask. Choose a narrow window of time (ex: 2 hours) and sign folks up by 10 minute slots, so that the phones don’t stop ringing.
  • Throw an event outside your MoC’s office. You don’t need an appointment to make a big impact. Show up with a group and demand to speak with either your MoC or the District or Office Director. Decide in advance who’s doing the talking. Make sure your rep knows you’re their constituents. Take plenty of videos and photos, and either invite the media or send them your footage! But remember: it’s still a pandemic, so require masks and social distancing.

However you take action during this second week of Congressional recess, the important thing is to commit to something. This period of time is our best chance to pass progressive policies before midterms hit and we risk losing the majority. We know Democrats have the potential to do amazing things with the current Congress and White House. Let’s help them get there.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to call out Republicans for whining about “cancel culture” while boycotting everyone who disagrees with them, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Today’s Action: Plan an event at your MoC’s office…it’s Congressional recess!

Congress has adjourned for recess and our Members of Congress are at home. And their number one priority should be listening to YOUR demands.

This week, it’s vital we hit up our MoC’s on major issues that need a little more support to cross the finish line. So every day, we’ll be featuring a different way to get your MoC’s attention! Next up…

Plan an event at your MoC’s office!

Maybe you prefer group plans over one-on-one meetings. Perhaps your MoC is someone who needs a bit of drama to change their mind on a sticky issue – or they could be a champion if they had the right kind of positive affirmation. If any of these are true for you, planning an event during recess is a GREAT way to make a big difference.

  • Try to schedule an appointment. Call or email your MoC’s office to see if they have availability (be sure to call the physical office you intend to visit!) But don’t worry if you can’t get an appointment – nothing puts on pressure like an unexpected event.
  • Know your target. If your MoC literally isn’t in office that day, request a conversation with the District or Office Director. Don’t give up until you’ve gotten it!
  • Plan the ask. Decide in advance who’s doing the talking and what the script is. Make sure your rep knows you’re their constituents and they work for you. We suggest focusing on the following topics, select whichever your rep needs the biggest push on:
  • Visual visual visual! Take plenty of videos and photos! Signs and props go a long way to quickly and clearly explaining your ask.
  • Invite the media. Amplify your message by notifying local news channels and papers in advance, and greet them upon arrival – and save their contact info for follow-ups.
  • Share on social media. Upload those videos and a summary of your meeting and asks on social media…be sure to tag your rep!
  • Remember…there’s still a pandemic. Enforce a mask rule, bring hand sanitizer, and maintain social distancing. Consider holding your event outside the offices instead of inside.

Gather your friends, family, and community and plan an event to your MoC’s office this week during Congressional recess! And if this strategy doesn’t make sense for you, we’ll see you tomorrow for your planning your next approach to getting their attention.

Credit where credit is due! Thanks to the good folks of Indivisible for their comprehensive guide to planning office visits.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition telling Senate Democrats to end the filibuster, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Our Members of Congress have left Washington D.C. and are now at home in-state (unless Ted Cruz flew to Cancun again…) It’s Congressional recess, and our best chance to connect and push on the topics we need to see move forward!

This week, it’s vital we hit up our MoC’s on major issues that need a little more support to cross the finish line. So every day, we’ll be featuring a different way to get your MoC’s attention! Starting with…

Schedule a meeting with your Members of Congress!

The traditional route hasn’t gone away, even with the pandemic, as many MoC’s now hold virtual meeting options. A personal conversation is one of the best ways to convince your MoC’s just how big the demand for any given topic is. Know that you might end up meeting with a member of their staff – and that’s good, too!

  • Schedule a meeting. Call or email your MoC’s offices (or check their website for meeting request submission forms, enter your address to pull up your rep’s website) for meeting availability. Expect anywhere between 5-15 minutes if you are confirmed.
  • Plan your asks. Choose 1-3 topics to speak passionately on, and make sure your calls-to-action are crystal clear (ex: “I want you to put pressure on your colleagues to abolish the filibuster.”) We suggest the following topics:
  • Put it in writing. Keep it to 1-2 pages, and deliver it to your MoC or their staff at the end of your meeting (or via email, if virtual). Don’t depend on their note-taking!
  • Share on social media. Snap a photo if you can, and share a summary of your meeting and asks on social media…be sure to tag your rep!

Put in your requests to meet with your MoC’s today! But in case you don’t get scheduled, we’ll see you tomorrow for your planning your next approach to getting their attention.

Today’s Action: Meet the THRIVE Agenda!

We all know the year we’ve had. A pandemic which has killed nearly 550,000 Americans and devastated our economy. A national outcry over systemic racism, not just in police brutality and violence but in every corner of our society. Overcoming the oppressive and hateful Trump administration, knowing that recovery from his policies will be a long road ahead of us.

All of this and more is why Congressional progressives have introduced the THRIVE Agenda, a $10 trillion ten-year plan to build back our country better than it’s ever been.

Today’s Action: Tell the Senate to pass universal background checks and expand waiting periods on gun purchases!

Last night in Boulder, Colorado, ten people were killed in the seventh mass shooting in seven days in the US. This is a uniquely American problem, and the solutions are clear.

It has been 27 years since Congress passed meaningful gun safety legislation, and thousands of people have died as a result of this gross inaction. But a few weeks ago, House Democrats passed two bills to institute universal background checks and extend waiting periods on purchases.

With Democrats in control of what comes to the floor, Senate Republicans will be forced to finally answer whether they’re for or against these common sense and incredibly popular safety precautions, rather than hiding behind the excuses around more controversial measures.

Call or email your Senators and tell them to support universal background checks and expanded waiting periods on gun purchases!

An improved background check system might have prevented the 2015 white supremacy-inspired mass shooting at a historic Black church in Charleston, SC…ditto to the 2017 Sutherland Springs shooting that killed 25. A Washington State study found that 1-in-10 online gun purchases were made by individuals who would have been otherwise prevented by background checks due to rape, domestic violence, and other charges.

And an enforced ten-day waiting period may have cooled the Atlanta shooter’s impulses, or given time for family and community to become alerted to his plan and help prevent it.

Although these laws would not be the “final answer” in gun safety, there is no question that they would help. An improved process is a first of many needed steps to not only help prevent future mass shootings…but save thousands of lives lost each year that never make the headlines.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand their support of universal backgrounds checks and expanded waiting periods. Tell them that gun safety must be a high priority for reducing the epidemic of bloodshed in our country, and these changes are a popular and common sense step in the right direction.

PS: Unless ten Republicans come on board with all Democrats, these bills won’t pass the filibuster. So remind your Senators that they must support overturning the filibuster to make any meaningful change in gun safety – and that’s what you want to see!
