Today’s Action: Statehood for Washington, DC

We don’t know about you, but yesterday felt GOOD. Trump creeping away in the early morning. Our history-making Madam Vice President sworn into office. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell….

…and the first delivery of President Biden’s executive orders: re-entering us into the Paris Climate Accord and World Health Organization, overturning the Muslim Ban, installing a pandemic response coordinator, cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline, including non-citizens in the Census, halting the Trump’s border wall, returning directives for racial equity in federal agencies, and so much more.

These overnight changes exemplify the power of the people. Now we know what we can do. With nothing but grit and the rights guaranteed by the Constitution (sometimes not even), we toppled a fascist regime. Now we have allies in power. Assembling this team and kickstarting their term isn’t the end…it’s the beginning.

So what’s our first OD Action of the Biden Presidency and newly-Democratic Congress? To strengthen the power of the people even more. In honor of and gratitude for the incredible Black women leaders who organized thousands of boots-on-the-ground volunteers in Georgia to deliver a Democratic President and Democratic Majority in the Senate, and in honor of the Black activists who defined 2020 with their nationwide calls for valuing for Black lives…we are calling for statehood for Washington D.C.

D.C., with a population larger than the states of either Vermont and Wyoming, is a plurality-Black city (nearly 50%). But unlike the residents of Vermont and Wyoming, who each have two Senators and one Representative in Congress for their overwhelmingly white populations, residents of D.C. have no voices speaking for them at the federal level.

Statehood for D.C. is a civil rights issue. It’s a voter rights issue. It’s a democracy issue. And fresh off of Trump’s presidency, which sought to destroy all three, there couldn’t be a more apt campaign with which to kick off this new era.

Black votes matter. Call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor and support H.R. 51, Washington, D.C. Admission Act. (If your Representative has already co-sponsored, thank them!)
