Today’s Action: Help veterans during the pandemic this Memorial Day

This is certainly a different Memorial Day than previous years, as many of the barbeques and beach visits have been cancelled. But it’s also an opportunity to reflect, perhaps more sincerely than usual.

Today as a nation, we commemorate fallen U.S. troops. As progressives, we also hold anger that this tragic loss of life is due to reasons we believe could and should have been avoided. Over 60,000 U.S. troops have died in the endless war since September 11, 2001. And over 1 million non-American civilians have lost their lives in the same timespan from our conflicts just in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Yemen.

We also face a global pandemic this year, which will shortly surpass 100,000 American deaths, and veterans have been severely impacted by this virus. Already a vulnerable population, with high numbers of homelessness, physical disabilities, mental illness, and suicide rates, the shutdowns have drastically altered veteran financial, medical, and emotional support systems. But even if you are under lockdown, there are still ways to support veterans today and throughout this crisis.

  • Connect with veterans groups coordinating at-home volunteer opportunities. May we suggest Soldiers’ Angels, which organizes card and letter-writing campaigns, baked goods care packages, mask-making, and no-sew blanket and bracelet making.
  • Call or email your local Veteran Affairs (VA) facility, or fill out the volunteering form. Each location may have a specific type of need during the pandemic.
  • Know a veteran? The Veteran History Project wants their story! Conduct and record an interview remotely over Zoom or Skype to be added to the VHP archives.
  • Donate your old vehicle to the National Veterans Foundation! They’ll arrange pick-up and even improve your car before selling, raising the value of your donation.
  • Reach out to veterans. If you have veterans in your life, it’s more important than ever to simply call them up to ask how they’re managing during the pandemic, and if they’re honoring Memorial Day. For many, today is a very personal, somber day of reflection for lost comrades.

Pick the volunteer activity that most speaks to you this Memorial Day – and organize your community remotely to join you.
