Today’s Action: Tell your Members of Congress to pass the BREATHE Act

Former police officer Derek Chauvin’s trial continues this week in Minneapolis – Chauvin is charged with the murder of George Floyd, whose death and words, “I can’t breathe,” sparked nationwide protests last year against the systemic police brutality toward Black people.

Yesterday, just miles from where Chauvin’s trial is taking place, another young Black man was shot and killed by law enforcement during a traffic stop. 20-year-old Daunte Wright has been ripped away from his community and this world, the next victim of the white supremacy and violence that drives our policing practices.

This must end. We need the BREATHE Act.

Call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to cosponsor the BREATHE Act to combat police brutality against Black communities.

The continued assault on Black people by police is inhumane, unjust, and designed to work this way. To overcome it, we must demand sweeping changes to how our legal and law enforcement systems are structured and funded at the cost of Black lives.

Movement 4 Black Lives’ BREATHE Act calls for divesting federal funds from policing and incarceration, and investing those funds in community-driven safety initiatives, robust community-building, and holding our leaders accountable to their promises to support Black communities.

For Duante Wright, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, and so many more…demand the BREATHE Act.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and urge them to support the BREATHE Act to re-imagine policing by investing in community safety-driven initiatives.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition pledging to wear a mask as long as their is risk to those around us, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
