Today’s Action: Congressional spending bill looming…keep the wall out!
Congress has until this Thursday to create a spending bill that Trump signs off on. Most likely, they will pass a continuing resolution to maintain spending at current levels, pushing the deadline to December 20, rather than risk the second government shutdown of the year. The argument is the same as it’s been since the beginning: Trump wants money to build the border wall that Mexico has ‘refused’ to pay for, and we absolutely do not want that to happen.
Democrats must stand firm now through December 20 and keep Trump’s xenophobic demands at bay. No one wants a shutdown – even Trump, who faired poorly after his last one – so we’re in a great position to point-blank refuse. We just need to make sure Democrats in Congress show up to the negotiating table with their spines on straight.
The current spending levels are still allowing Trump to run concentration camps at the border and build sections of the border wall, and a continuing resolution will maintain his access to those funds. This means that, while we absolutely need to avoid a funding increase, the bigger goal to fight for is actually a reduction from last year’s numbers down to Obama-era funding levels or lower.
The status quo is unacceptable. We need Democrats to push harder than ever as they approach budget talks in December, and Republicans to know we, and our voting power, haven’t gone away.
