Today’s Action: Support universal free meals for students
In the richest countries in the world, one in seven children in the United States goes hungry each year. It’s an unconscionable number, and one that free and reduced public school meal programs have attempted to resolve.
But our current system isn’t enough for millions of children. Many come from families who do not qualify despite a daily struggle to make finances meet, and some qualify but do not participate (for a variety of roadblock reasons, from paperwork burden to debilitating poverty stigma). The result? Millions of hungry students with lower attendance rates, behavior problems, and stymied academic performance.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have introduced a game-changing new policy to eliminate childhood hunger: a universal free meal program for all students in all public schools, including access to breakfast, lunch, and dinner all year long.
Call or email your Members of Congress and demand they cosponsor the Universal School Meals Program Act of 2019 (S.2609/H.R.4684). No child should go hungry – ever – in our country.
Universal free school meals has already been tested out in nearly 5,000 school districts around the country, and the results are astoundingly positive: increased student enrollment, a complete elimination of the poverty stigma that accompanies students who eat school meals (especially breakfast), and classrooms full of students who are well-nourished and ready to learn.
The Universal School Meals Program Act doesn’t just provide three meals a day during the school year – it eliminates school debt from unpaid meal fees, saves families from humiliating tactics to collect on those debts, and boosts EBT funding (food stamps) for families over the summer months.
No student should lose out on learning due to hunger. For the 11 million children who currently do, let’s get this passed as soon as possible.
