Today’s Action: A green economic recovery plan from coronavirus
There is no silver-lining to the coronavirus pandemic – it is an unequivocable tragedy. But it is providing insight into what it will take to emerge from this crisis stronger, particularly with regard to the environment and labor.
We have seen record clean air quality in Los Angeles, 11,000 fewer deaths in the UK and Europe due to higher air quality, and the renewed ecognition that working-class laborers are absolutely essential and vital parts of our economy,deserving of protection and higher pay.
We must work to lock in legislation for a green economic recovery plan, so that these gains are not temporary.
Call or email your Members of Congress and demand a green economic recovery plan: a federal jobs program that prioritizes green jobs…and blocks bailouts for the fossil fuel industry. See below for the call script!
Republicans have a vested financial and political interest in returning to business as usual. Or, capitalizing on the shock of our communal systems, digging their corporate-friendly, anti-environment, anti-labor claws in even deeper while most voters struggle with basic needs, let alone having time to mobilize and fight back. This is no conspiracy theory – in fact, it’s a favorite and tested strategy. (Add Naomi Klein’s Shock Doctrine to the top of your reading list!)
We must be vigilant in demanding a green economic recovery plan that addresses our other ongoing global crisis (climate change) and prioritizes the working people who are leading us through this pandemic…because behind closed doors, Republicans, fossil fuel industry leaders, and other corporate conglomerates are already plotting how to do the exact opposite.
