Today’s Action: Tell Kroger’s CEO to keep hazard pay for employees

The Kroger Company is the largest supermarket company in the world – and the third largest retail company in the world, behind Walmart and Costco. You may know the brand under names such as Dillon’s, Food4Less, Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, Home Chef, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs, and Smith’s Food and Drug, among others.

With restaurants closed and fear taking hold, Americans have flooded grocery stores, providing a record-breaking 30% increase in sales to Kroger during the first quarter and expectations of those numbers to continue on the rest of the year.

But Kroger’s employees? After receiving a $2 “hero” pay increase on March 31 and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertisements thanking their workers, Kroger has announced they will discontinue the pay increase this Sunday, May 17.

Call the Customer Service line (1-800-576-4377), submit a comment, and then tweet at Kroger using the hashtag #KrogerHazardPay, demanding CEO Rodney McMullen maintain Hero Pay for all employees until we have a vaccine.

Kroger’s CEO Rodney McMullen banked more than $21 million in 2019. Meanwhile, the average Kroger employee makes less than $25,000 a year. And in the last six months, Kroger spent $755 million buying back its own stock. Kroger, in short, is WEALTHY and it’s going to be even wealthier in four days when it drops the hazard pay policy.

We are on the brink of what could be a historic moment in the labor movement, when we truly recognize and appreciate what our working class does to keep our country running during national crisis – and we choose to protect and properly compensate them for their labor. And if it means taking on one corporation at a time, we’re here for that fight.

Call (1-800-576-4377), submit a comment, and then tweet at Kroger using the hashtag #KrogerHazardPay to demand Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen maintain its $2/hour hazard pay (“Hero Pay”) for all employees until we are out of this crisis – at least until a vaccine is available.
