Today’s Action: Demand Congressional response to Yemen
For once, Trump has done something bad enough that even Mitch McConnell is doing something.
Trump has blanket-denied the CIA’s findings that the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was directly responsible for the death of Washington Post journalist and permanent American resident Jamal Khashoggi. The president has continued his praise AND weapons supply for the regime responsible for 13 million Yemenis facing starvation. Why? Well, possibly due to his own private business interests in Saudi Arabia.
And amidst national and international outcry for this willful blindness, the Senate has voted to respond to Saudi Arabia with a debate on ending U.S. involvement in the human rights atrocities in Yemen. Debate will likely begin next week, and we have some very specific demands to make (thank you to the good people of ACLU!):
Call or email your Members of Congress and demand the following (be specific and feel free to read this off when you call):
- End U.S. support of Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen, including eliminating refueling of Saudi aircrafts, military advice, and information.
- Eliminate all U.S. use of force in Yemen, including any actions “justified” under the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF)
Saudi Arabia’s brutal warfare against Yemen is being called the worst humanitarian crisis of our time — and the United States is both fueling their weapons and contributing to the killings. But if Trump won’t speak up against the death of one journalist, he absolutely won’t stop this deadly supply chain without political pressure. Now that the Senate is talking, it’s important that we have a say in that conversation.
PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition demanding McConnell allow a vote on the bipartisan bill to stop Trump from firing Special Counsel Mueller, and check out the brilliant “Don’t Think of an Elephant” by George Lakoff — a quick read that contains the ultimate keys for Democrats to win elections — and arguments.
