Today’s Action: Demand the Senate reconvenes NOW to convict Trump

Donald Trump has made history: he is the only president of the United States to be impeached twice. Yesterday, the House voted 232-197, with ten Republicans joining Democrats in condemning their leader for inciting a violent coup that killed five and overran Congress, the grand finale to months of anti-democratic unrest and refusal to concede the election.

Next the impeachment articles move to the Senate. But the big question is when. Because although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has hinted his approval of the impeachment proceedings, he’s intentionally delaying the Senate’s return until January 19, instead of allowing Trump’s egregious criminality to be addressed immediately.

Call or email your Senators and demand they press Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to reconvene the Senate IMMEDIATELY, so that Trump’s trial and conviction are not delayed.

Why is the timing so important? First, delaying until January 19, the day before the inauguration, may stymie Biden’s and the soon-to-be Democratic-majority Senate’s ability to kickstart the legislation we want to see immediately. McConnell is holding the trial hostage as his final act of majority-leader obstruction.

Second, because of momentum. Republican leaders are strongly feeling the heat to distance themselves and the party as a whole from Trump, as their major corporate donors are abandoning them for supporting his coup. But will they have the same urgency in three months, when the headlines have moved on and the donors creep back? We’d rather not risk it.

Six days until Biden and Democrats take control…but it’s only appropriate that we’re still fighting Don and Mitch to the bitter end of this dark era.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and tell them Trump’s trial can’t wait. Urge them to pressure Mitch McConnell into bringing the Senate back NOW, not waiting until January 19.
