Today’s Action: Tell your Senators to vote against William Barr, and protect the Mueller investigation
Last week, the Senate held confirmation hearings for William Barr, Trump’s pick for permanent United States Attorney General. If confirmed, Barr would replace the ousted Jeff Sessions and temporary-AG Matthew G. Whitacre. And, he’d be the new boss of Mueller’s Russian collusion investigation.
Barr is overtly biased. In 2017, he was a candidate to be Trump’s chief defense lawyer in the Russia investigation, and questioned the validity of the probe in the New York Times. And last June, Barr sent an unsolicited 20-page memo to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, slamming Mueller’s inquiry as “fatally misconceived.”
When pressed by Democratic Senators, Barr refused to give assurances that he would recuse himself from the investigation and release the full final report to the public — both of which are necessary to ensure his support for the investigation to reach its natural conclusion. Thus, Barr must not be placed in charge of arguably the biggest conspiracy to ever hit the White House.
Protecting the Mueller investigation has bipartisan support. Republican Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Mitt Romney (R-UT) have joined Democrats in making public statements demanding Mueller’s work continue unfettered.
The investigation has so far uncovered more than 30 criminal charges and four guilty pleas. And there’s more to come. We need every member of Congress fighting back against Trump’s desperate attempt to bury his own crimes.
Right now, that means keeping William Barr out of the drivers seat.
