Today’s Action: Acknowledge our history on Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us behind the keyboard at OD Action to you, our friends in the OD Action community! We are thankful for all of YOU, doing your part each day to fight back the present darkness in our country. It is a national effort, and we are strong because we are in it together.

But whether it’s between dish prep or perhaps even gathered around the table with your family, we hope you’ll take a moment to acknowledge the past darkness as well, which has mostly been erased from national consciousness. The real history of Thanksgiving, not the second-grade play for the school assembly.

The New York Times has published two op-eds (here and here) which do a bang-up job detailing the story and context for this holiday – for many, hardly a happy day of blissful feasting and brotherhood. Let’s correct the Thanksgiving narrative, one household at a time.

And, we also invite you to acknowledge which tribal nation’s land you currently reside on. The historical borders of these nations are all but invisible in our contemporary setting, but we can still take a moment to reflect on our continued, passive participation in a 500-year-old occupation. Visit WhoseLand and use the map to find whose land you live on, and follow the links to read up on the nation.

We hope each of you enjoy a wonderful day with friends and family, full of joy, gratitude, and connection. And leftovers. So many leftovers.
