Today’s Action: Abolish the death penalty now

Our federal government had not executed anyone on death row since 2003 (though it has continued at the state level). But last year, Trump and Attorney General William Barr decided to reopen this barbaric practice…and a few days ago, executed three men back-to-back, against the wishes of the victims’ family in at least one case. There are more executions scheduled at both the federal and state level in the coming weeks.

This death penalty has been banned in 106 countries and many more have official moratoriums. The United States is in the small minority that still uses capital punishment, against the stance of the United Nations, which has stated it has “no place in the 21st century.”

Call or email your Members of Congress to cosponsor and pass H.R.4052/S.2390 to ban capital punishment at the federal level. Then, if your state still has the death penalty, call your state legislators to demand a state-wide ban (and turn moratoriums into bans).

Just like our policing practices, capital punishment is rife with systemic injustice. Death row sentences are disproportionately given to people of color (42% of those on death row are Black, despite only being 13.4% of the population) and when the victim is white.

Nearly all of those on death row come from poverty, and many are mentally disabled – folks far less able to afford quality legal representation and psychiatrists. And in fact, age, sex, economic class, and location are much stronger indicators of who will receive a death penalty sentence than the actual crimes, which are relatively indistinguishable from those that receive prison sentences.

It’s also EXPENSIVE, three-to-ten-times the cost of carrying out a lifetime sentence, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars – which could be spent on meaningful crime prevention, mental health, and rehabilitation programs.

Finally, there is absolutely no corroboration between the death penalty and lower crime rates. Nor is it foolproof, given that at least 350 people executed in our country were later found to have been innocent.

We have no justification for upholding capital punishment. It’s time to catch up with the rest of the world and abolish the death penalty.

Email or call your Members of Congress and demand they cosponsor H.R.4052/S.2390 to ban capital punishment at the federal level. Call or email your state legislators if your state still has the death penalty and tell them to get rid of it ASAP.
