Today’s Action: Attend a Town Hall…or plan one for your rep!

Congress is in recess through April 9, which means our reps are at home and working in their states and districts. And work means meeting with their constituents!

For the next week and a half, it’s vital we hit up our MoC’s on major issues that need a little more support to cross the finish line. So every day, we’ll be featuring a different way to get your MoC’s attention! Next up…

Attend a Town Hall…or plan one!

Town Halls are often easy ways for our reps to hear from a large number of constituents at once. But it’s also a place to put them on the public record for commitments to policy and answers to questions they’d rather dodge…which is why some representatives go years without holding them.

  • Attend a Town Hall. Check out Town Hall Project’s schedule of events across the country. Are your reps listed?
  • Request a Town Hall. If your MoC hasn’t scheduled one, request one! And, ask if they have any other public scheduled events during recess, and attend that.
  • Plan a Town Hall. Is your rep in hiding? Plan your own Town Hall (which is pretty easy now due to the abundance of virtual meeting options!) and send an invitation to their office to attend. If they don’t show up, hold it anyway and use it as an opportunity to share your ask with other constituents.
  • Prepare the ask. Decide in advance what your primary ask is – you may only get one question, so choose carefully based on what your MoC needs the biggest push on. We suggest focusing on the following topics:
  • Get it on record! Make sure you are recording a video of your complete ask and their complete response.
  • Share on social media and with local media. Upload those videos and a summary of your meeting and asks on social media. Send it to your local newspapers!
  • Remember…there’s still a pandemic. If your Town Hall is in person, wear a mask rule, bring hand sanitizer, and maintain social distancing.

Gather your friends, family, and community to attend or plan a Town Hall with your MoC’s during Congressional recess!

PS. Thanks to the good folks of Indivisible for their comprehensive guide to planning your own Town Hall.
