Today’s Action: Plan a tweet storm

Congress is on recess through April 9, which means your Members of Congress are at their home offices, meeting with constituents and staff to discuss issues and gather opinions.

For the next week, it’s vital we hit up our MoC’s on major issues that need a little more support to cross the finish line. This week, we’ve featured a different way to get your MoC’s attention at the local level, including scheduling a one-on-one meeting, holding an event at their office, attending or planning your own Town Hall, and writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper. Next up…

Hold a Twitterstorm or phonestorm

Strength in numbers! Gather your friends, family, and community to swarm your MoC’s social media or phone lines about the same issue – because there’s nothing like a burst of energy and activity to get someone’s attention.

  • Choose your ask. Select ONE topic that your MoC needs to be pushed on. We suggest choosing from the following, which need major support in the coming weeks:
  • Twitterstorm. Select a two-hour window during business hours to invite your community to join you in tweeting at your MoC with your chosen ask. Be sure to communicate the Twitter handle of your MoC and your preferred hashtags in advance.
  • Or, use Indivisible’s handy Twitter storm tool in organizing your community, if your chosen topic is the THRIVE Agenda or Statehood for D.C.
  • Call Relay. Organize your community to call your MoC’s office on the same day with the same ask. Depending on the size of your community, you can choose a narrow window of time (ex: 2 hours) and sign folks up by 5 or 10 minute slots. Provide messaging in advance – don’t assume your community understands the issue as well as you do!

However you choose to participate in Congressional Recess, the important thing is to take action at least once. Democrats have the majority, but the filibuster ensures Republicans hold nearly as much power…so we have a lot of work ahead of us to make the big changes we want to see!

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition telling film/tv execs in Georgia to stand against voter suppression laws, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
