Today’s Action: Housing is a human right – rent relief during coronavirus

Nearly one-third of all renters failed to make rent on April 1st and 22 million workers are newly unemployed. Meanwhile, about 60 million people are still waiting for their one-time stimulus, and rent is due AGAIN this Friday.

It couldn’t be clearer that we need immediate emergency support for renters during coronavirus for our hyper-vulnerable working class and poor, and many middle-class renters who are now unemployed. It’s also clear that millionaires landlords and large real estate corporations (like Jared Kushner’s, which is carrying out disgusting predatory practices during coronavirus) can and should pause rent, late fees, and pause evictions – but won’t without government orders.

Call or email your state legislators AND Members of Congress and ask them each to create a rent-relief policy for the duration of the coronavirus emergency. Remind them that housing is a human right.

We must tackle rent relief at both the state and the federal level – because renters can’t wait. And we’re seeing examples in both places.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has introduced the Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act of 2020 to Congress, which would cancel rent and mortgage payments nationwide during the pandemic, while simultaneously protecting landlords and land owners for income losses.

And in a state example, Gov. Carney of Delaware created a policy providing $1,500 of rent and electricity assistance to struggling families.

Coronavirus isn’t going away for a while – we’re expecting a resurgence this fall even greater than the present moment. Our leaders must act now to address the serious ongoing housing crisis and human rights issue tens of millions of Americans will face over the coming year.

Email or call your Members of Congress AND state legislators and demand they create or support rent-relief policy that lasts for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. Refer Members of Congress to Rep. Omar’s Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act to get them started.

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition calling on White House medical experts to stop excusing Trump’s dangerous “advice”, and check out the brilliant “Don’t Think of an Elephant” by George Lakoff — a quick read that contains the ultimate keys for Democrats to win elections — and arguments.
