Susan Collins (R-ME) has been posing as a moderate Republican throughout Trump’s presidency. And ultimately, it doesn’t make a difference what she claims to be: she’s still voting with him and the rest of the right wing
On Wednesday, Collins stuck with Republicans to vote down an amendment on the coronavirus relief bill to increase sick and family leave. And this is just one of so many votes in which her “moderate” sensibilities did absolutely nothing for working Americans during economic and moral crisis. Collins has banked her future on Trump’s vision: voting to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, acquitting Trump during impeachment, and siding with the president 94% of the time.
Susan Collins isn’t a moderate – she’s a Trump tool. And she’s just one of several Senators that the good folks of SwingLeft have identified as vulnerable in this November’s election.
Wednesday’s vote to reject increased sick and family leave isn’t the first time Collins ignored the threat of a global health scare: in 2009, she removed $870 million of pandemic preparation in the stimulus package.
Ultimately, she is one of 53 Republicans in the Senate working aggressively to promote the right wing agenda. In a perfect world, every single one of them would get booted out this November. But the reality (beyond the fact that only a third of them are up for re-election) is that there are a handful of very vulnerable Republicans senators whose elections we can have a major impact on. So our job, no matter where we live, is to help them by reaching out to voters in those states and encouraging them to turn out on November 3rd.
Now that we’re about to be more housebound from coronavirus, writing letters is the perfect at-home activity! Just remember to wash your hands for twenty seconds before you start…
