Today’s Action: Celebrate the first federally recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

This past Friday President Biden issued a proclamation recognizing today as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a first for an American president. It comes after a long fight to refocus the federal holiday toward First Nation people, a welcomed contrast from the positions of past administrations.

Biden wrote in his proclamation, “For generations, federal policies systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures. Today, we recognize indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society.”

The decree is a great first step, but indigenous activists are still calling for more to be done. Despite being recognized, it is still not technically a federal holiday — though there’s a bill in Congress proposing it. Those in support of the holiday say federal recognition could bring attention to the extensive issues that still plague indigenous communities today, but advocates also point out that America has yet to truly make amends for the atrocities committed — past and present — against Native peoples.

Take a few minutes this Indigenous Peoples’ Day to write to President Biden and ask him to be the first president to formally apologize for the country’s treatment of indigenous people. While you’re at it, call (202.224.3121) or write Congress and tell them to pass a bill that federally recognizes Indigenous People’s Day!

Some states have been celebrating the holiday with a focus on Native Americans since 1990. It’s time for the rest of the country to catch up.

Today, indigenous communities are still fighting for water, for healthcare, for land, for visibility — it’s well past time to support them in their fight. Our leaders need to walk the walk this Indigenous People’s Day and finally work to enact real change for Native communities.
