Today’s Action: Honor soldiers – not war criminals
Today is Memorial Day, the holiday we set aside to honor American soldiers who have died while serving in the armed forces. Regardless of our thoughts and opinions on the wars our government engages in, we can all agree on one thing: every life lost is both a personal and a national tragedy. Today we remember all of those departed from us.
But, in a move that is as predictable as it is despicable, Trump is using this day to justify pardoning war criminals, teasing on Friday several cases he was reviewing for a possible announcement today.
We truly can’t believe we even have to say this, but here goes: The President of the United States should not pardon war criminals.
Although Trump did not release the names of those individuals he is considering last week, there are several cases likely: a Blackwater security guard convicted of first-degree murder of unarmed civilians, a soldier who stabbed to death a helpless teenage captive and murdered a young girl and elderly man without justification, and others who committed heinous, unjustified, and intentional acts of civilian murder.
No one is for this, not the general public, nor both current and retired military leadership, very little support except for a few FOX news hosts and Trump’s most blindly loyal base (who see no issue with the deaths of innocent lives when they’re brown.) To pardon war crimes is to show the world that our country openly does not take responsibility for our actions, that we accept and glorify these horrific acts.
Government offices are closed today – and our genuine wish for the OD Action community is to have a lovely holiday and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. However, Trump’s timing of pushing these actions over the holiday weekend is strategic, to help him avoid outcry.
So, today’s action is: boost the outcry. Leave a voicemail, email, or tweet your Members of Congress today and ask them to make a public statement condemning Trump’s pardon of war criminals.
On the day that we honor those who fell in uniform, Trump is instead honoring those who disgraced the same uniform — and that is simply unacceptable.
