Today’s Action: Tell your leaders to keep Trump’s federal troops OUT

Trump wants to run campaign ads featuring violent protests. So, after getting caught using imagery from a Ukrainian protest to make his point, he’s inciting American violence with federal troops. His “Law & Order” rallying cries, directly lifted from the backlash to Civil Right in the 50’s/60’s, accompany his deployments to blue cities, many of which with large Black communities.

What started with a trial run in Portland, where Customs & Border Patrol agents threw protesters into unmarked vans and shattered the skull of one peaceful attendee, is now expanding to a Department of Homeland Security takeover of Kansas City, Chicago, Albuquerque, Detroit, Cleveland, and Milwaukee – many of which have had only peaceful protests recently. Trump has floated other cities beyond this list, including Philadelphia and Oakland.

The constitutionality of Trump’s actions are grey-area at best, and he’s under investigation for Portland. Also, federal troop presence has actually escalated violence, not reduced it. But for his ad campaign? That’s a perfect outcome.

Call or email your Governor and Mayor and demand they resist Trump’s plan to send federal troops into your state and/or city’s protests. Follow with a call or email to your Members of Congress, and tell them to support the Preventing Authoritarian Policing Tactics on America’s Streets Act (as a stand-alone act AND as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act).

Trump is heading into November’s election in desperate need for good publicity. How many more protesters will be injured, how many constitutional rights obliterated, before his poll numbers look better?

These deployments into heavily-Democratic cities is deeply disturbing, yet another boundary-breaking test for how far Trump can go in controlling the narrative and suppressing the opposition. And with Trump already saying he won’t commit to conceding the election if he loses, imagine the protests – and the unconstitutional federal response – we’ll have at that point. Unless we call out this dictator and fight him now.

Email or call your Governor and Mayor and tell them to keep Trump’s violent federal troops out of our protests for justice. Then, email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand their support of the Preventing Authoritarian Policing Tactics on America’s Streets Act (as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Act AND passing it on its own).
