2/12: Trump is gone, but his immigration atrocities remain. It’s time to #DefundHate!

One of President Biden’s first actions upon taking office was establishing a 100-day deportation moratorium, temporarily halting the anti-immigrant mechanism that Trump so gleefully built his presidency upon. And although a Texas judge temporarily blocked the executive order, the judge still stated that only the most serious deportation cases should be allowed to continue (ex: convicted felons).

At which point Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) went completely rogue and deported at least 72 people, including a two-month-old baby and 21 other completely innocent children to Haiti, which is currently in political turmoil and incredibly dangerous. And unfortunately, this is business as usual for ICE and their sister-agency Customs and Border Patrol (CBP).

ICE and CBP are a $26 billion/year immigrant-detention, deportation, and killing machine. And every year, under every President (yes, including Obama) and Congress, their budget has ballooned – now triple the 2003 budget, when the programs were founded.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand they #DefundHATE by eliminating the ICE and CBP agencies, instead establishing community-based, not-for-profit, alternative-to-detention programs.

Much of ICE/CBP funding is immediately funneled into the for-profit prison system, lining the pockets of millionaires who have friends in high places to grab those lucrative federal contracts. In 1994, an average of 7,000 immigrants were detained per day…today, that number is over 50,000 and growing because it’s so profitable. Meanwhile, detention conditions are incredibly inhumane, despite the hefty budget, since human rights hurt the bottom line.

Asking for a return to pre-Trump policy isn’t good enough. We must push much further, to eliminate these dangerous and deadly agencies entirely and demand community-based alternatives to the mass detention and deportation of immigrants.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them our for-profit, detention-based immigration system is inhumane and unacceptable. It’s time to #DefundHATE by eliminating ICE and CBP, and moving toward community-based, not-for-profit, alternative-to-detention programs.
