Today’s Action: Release jail and prison inmates to slow coronavirus

The Parnell Correctional Facility in Michigan has an infection rate of 10% among the prisoners and 21% among the staff. And though it’s not surprising, it is predictable and should have been anticipated. While most of us diligently hold out under extended stay-at-home mandates, those in prison or jail are forced to remain in cramped, crowded and often unsanitary environments — conditions primed for the rapid spread of disease.

Inmates in our prison and jail systems are already some of our most vulnerable citizens – predominantly Black and Hispanic men from lower socioeconomic background, and very much victims of justice systems with overtly racist sentencing procedures.

States must act NOW to thin out the prison and jail populations, to protect both those released and those who remain from this contagious virus.

Call or email your Governor and demand they lower your state’s jail and prison populations by releasing those serving sentences for minor or non-violent crimes, especially the elderly, those who cannot afford cash bail, and anyone close to finishing their sentence as long as the pandemic is active.

These efforts have already begun around the nation: from Ohio, where hundreds of defendants waiting for their trial date are now released, to Los Angeles County, where inmates are being released early.

But elsewhere, the same recommendation has met resistance and flat-out refusal. And across the board, inmates are generally responsible for their own hygiene – in Arizona, for example, bathrooms are not stocked with soap and prisoners must pay for it themselves. With inhumane and unsanitary conditions like these, it is vital we act fast.

Inmates in our jails and prison systems already lack the ability to advocate for themselves, to speak out and to gain media attention, and it may only be a matter of days before these crowded institutions begin to feel the full effects of coronavirus. On behalf of those without a voice, please raise yours today.

Email or call your Governor and ask them to protect inmates from coronavirus by reducing the population of prisons and jails in your state. Recommend they release nonviolent prisoners who are close to the end of their sentence, especially the elderly and those being held because they cannot afford cash bail.
