Today’s Action: Take Action on Coronavirus and Trump, Part 2

Today, we’re looking at Trump’s funding request to Congress to address the spread of coronavirus to the United States. Predictably, for a man who first called the disease “the new hoax,” and then suggested we just use a flu vaccine to cure it, it’s about as bad as you would expect.

Trump wants Congress to allocate $2.5 billion toward combating the spread of coronavirus, but even Republicans are complaining this is too low. We need a clean emergency funding bill at the right price and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is calling for $8.5 billion.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them to support a clean emergency funding bill that fully covers projected costs of combating the spread of coronavirus (Chuck Schumer suggested $8.5 billion), without stealing funds from other life-saving programs or including any unrelated riders.

Of this $2.5 billion, Trump wants $535 million to come directly out of Ebola response funding, another urgent global health issue, especially in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Do we need to point out the ‘America First’ methodology (AKA racism) behind this particular reallocation? An additional $37 million would come from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program…which will cut heating for about 750,000 low-income families, many still in the dead of winter.

A clean emergency funding bill doesn’t just keep other programs intact as-is; it also guarantees Trump can’t later reallocate coronavirus funding to other programs he’d rather spend money on. Sound familiar?

Public pressure is vital at this key time for curbing the impact of coronavirus – and it’s also effective! Days after Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar announced he couldn’t guarantee an affordable vaccine, he was forced to walk it back and promise otherwise.

Make your calls. And then remember to wash your hands for twenty seconds, because phones tend to collect germs! (For more helpful tips, click here.)

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand a clean emergency funding bill for coronavirus that fully covers projected costs (Chuck Schumer recommends $8.5 billion), without taking funding from other programs or attaching riders that aren’t related to coronavirus.
