Today is Prime Day at Amazon.com. But before you jump on their sales, here are a few other numbers that help you see *why* they can afford their prices:
- Out of five states surveyed for companies with employees on food stamps, Amazon made the top-20 list in four
- Zero – the amount of federal taxes Amazon paid in 2017
- CEO Jeff Bezos is worth $140 billion…but his workers earn a median annual salary of only $28,446
- 2000 – the year Amazon shut down a call center after its workers attempted to unionize
…and this is just one American corporation, literally robbing from the poor and stealing federal resources to make private shareholders rich. That’s why Fight for 15 is taking action — fighting for a minimum wage of $15/hour and teaching workers how to strike and unionize without retaliation.
Work at an un-unionized corporation? Use the resources at Fight for 15 to learn how to safely strike for higher wages without retaliation. Doesn’t apply to you? Push your state reps and city council members for a state or citywide $15/hour wage (like California, New York, and Seattle, WA)!
Amazon is just one of many wealthy American corporations that pay their employees disgracefully below living standards, and aggressively break any worker attempts to unionize for better pay and safer working conditions. (Amazon warehouse employees have reported urinating in bottles to avoid being punished for bathroom breaks). McDonald’s and Walmart are other non-union companies that bank on food stamps to keep their workers fed.
It is entirely unacceptable for major corporations to depend on social networks like food stamps, subsidized living and healthcare (and in Amazon’s case, the roads and infrastructure they don’t pay into) in order to maximize private profits. Fighting for $15 doesn’t just benefit the workers — it benefits all taxpayers picking up the slack where corporations fall short.
If you work at a non-unionized corporation, Fight for 15 has the resources you need to campaign and strike for a $15/minimum wage. Those on the outside: demand a $15/hour living wage from your state reps and city council leaders!
