Today’s Action: Support the Green New Deal – vote in Senate (likely) TODAY
According to the U.N., the effects of climate change could be irreversible by 2030 if not immediately checked. Meanwhile, our president pulled the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord last year and has encouraged polluters, exacerbating global warming.
The Green New Deal is a framework of goals and principles to confront climate change head-on while tackling America’s rampant income inequality. The resolution sets the stage for the 2020 presidential elections and beyond — and it should!
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has pushed for a quick vote on the Green New Deal, in order to shut it down before it gains momentum. Therefore, resistant moderate Democrats and Republicans need to hear from us TODAY that climate change is no longer a debatable topic.
The vote is likely today. Email or call your Senators and tell them to vote IN FAVOR (not “Present”) of the Green New Deal, because Earth and her inhabitants are literally running out of time.
The Green New Deal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition the United States to 100% renewable energy sources in a decade (we’re currently at 11%).
And it goes beyond that: creating new jobs (including solar power panel installation and manufacturing electric cars) and advocating for universal healthcare and basic living income.
It’s an incredible package that the entire planet and all her inhabitants need to survive….but we’ll be playing the long game with our current leadership. Our first big step is championing it in the House and advocating for it in the Senate, thereby guaranteeing its spot front and center in the 2020 elections (because some Democrats *also* need a reminder).
