Today’s Action: Improve the COVID-19 financial stimulus package in Congress

Both chambers of Congress are working on COVID-19 relief packages, and a big topic is providing income relief to those out of work. On behalf of the millions of Americans now out of or unable to work, it’s clear that Congress must act fast. But not every plan is equal.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan provides a one-time cash payout of $1,200 per adult earning up to $75,000 plus a $400 bonus per child and phasing out after that, but gives less money to the poor, who need it most, and are most likely to put it straight back into stimulating the economy.

But Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA-43) has the same proposal with numbers that much better reflect the situation for millions now out of work: $2000/adult and $1000/child per month

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them you support Rep. Maxine Waters’ COVID-19 relief plan, to provide generous monthly cash support, suspend all credit card payments, negative credit reporting, and more. Be sure to send the link of the full plan!

Waters’ plan is thorough, and here are a few highlights:

  • Financial stabilizers of $2000/adult and $1000/child per month
  • Suspending credit payments (credit cards, mortgages, student loans, car loans and more) and interest for both individuals and small businesses
  • Suspending negative credit reporting so that no one’s credit is hurt as a result of COVID-19 job loss or financial strain
  • Banning evictions, foreclosures, and repossessions on homes and vehicles to ensure safe access to a quarantine area and the ability to travel for basic supplies and medical assistance
  • $50 billion in grants for small businesses negatively affected by COVID-19
  • Temporary ban on stock buyback to make sure companies are using their extra cash to pay workers and invest in communities
  • $10 billion for Community Development Block Grants for vulnerable communities, such as COVID-19 testing for people experiencing homelessness and delivering meals to people with mobility issues

As states continue to issue stay-at-home proclamations, it’s vital we pass a financial package soon – but it’s equally vital we push for the plan that actually helps our most vulnerable communities, our working class, our small businesses, and all those whose safety net was never big enough to ride out this crisis.

Email or call your Members of Congress and push for the generous support in Rep. Maxine Waters’ COVID-19 relief plan. Choose 2-3 priorities from the list above, or read the full plan to select the highlights to share with your reps.
