Today’s Action: Tell Congress to #DefundHate and cut ICE/CBP funding in the September budget
Last week, Trump’s deportation machine, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted the largest-ever raid in a single state, targeting six food processing plants in Mississippi. They detained nearly 700 workers and hundreds of children — many arriving home from their first day of the school year to find themselves alone without parents.
ICE did not warn Mississippi’s Child Protective Services of the impending raid, leaving the agency scrambling the find temporary care for the abandoned children. Nor did they give advanced warning to the schools, meaning school districts also had little time to arrange overnight care. In fact, ICE made no guarantees that any child would not be left to fend for themselves in the wake of their destructive force…so some were left alone.
Trump’s legacy of family separation continues. But we can slow it, if Congress cuts funding to ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The scope of the damage wrought by ICE and CBP is astonishing:
- There are more than 53,500 immigrants in detention right now, and 24 have died in-custody since Trump took office.
- Trump has detained at least 40,900 children since the start of the year, thousands of whom will now be placed in Fort Sill, a former WWII Japanese Internment Camp.
- More than 8,400 immigrants have been placed in solitary confinement since 2012, as punishment by our country’s deportation machine, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Meanwhile, Trump has requested from Congress a budget of billions MORE to fund the Department of Homeland Security, AKA his border terror toolbox. He wants more family jails, faster deportations, and an expansion of ICE and CBP.
Congress sets the budget. Congress has the power. And we control the House. Tell Democrats to stand strong and ask Republicans where their consciences went.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand they cut the funds for ICE and CBP in September budget talks. Remind them that every dollar toward Trump’s deportation machine equals complicity in his persecution of immigrants.
