Today’s Action: Tell the Senate to reconvene to expand background checks and ban assault weapons
Months ago, the House passed legislation to create universal background checks for gun purchases. Since then, it has sat in the Senate as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refuses to allow a vote.
Last week, our nation faced great tragedy with two mass shootings in under 24 hours. 31 innocent people are dead and 53 injured. This toll does not include other deaths from gun violence across the country which didn’t make the news – every day, 100 Americans die from guns.
The legislation is ready, but the Senate is in recess until September 9…unless McConnell calls an emergency session.
An improved background check system might have prevented the 2015 white supremacy-inspired mass shooting at a historic Black church in Charleston, SC…ditto to the 2017 Sutherland Springs shooting that killed 25. And a Washington State study found that 1-in-10 online gun purchases were made by individuals who would have been otherwise prevented by background checks due to rape, domestic violence, and other charges.
Universal background checks are, of course, not the final answer in gun safety. In fact, it’s likely it would not have prevented the recent El Paso and Dayton mass killings – which is why we also need a ban on assault-style weapons.
The pressure is on. Trump has tweeted that he’s looking at background check legislation, and claims McConnell is, too. McConnell also didn’t rule out a ban on assault weapons in a recent interview. This is a huge step, though there’s plenty of time for them to backtrack if public pressure relaxes…which means we can’t let it.
