Today’s Action: Abolish the death penalty
In 1989, Donald Trump bought a full-page newspaper ads calling for the death penalty to be reinstated in New York. The ad was in direct response to “The Central Park 5,” five boys of color wrongfully convicted of the brutal rape of a young white woman. The young men each served years in prison before they were fully exonerated. Trump has never apologized, and thankfully, all of the men are still alive.
Two decades later, Trump’s violent hatred for people of color is clear…and so is his blood-lust for execution. He and his Justice department have announced that they will begin executing federal prisoners after nearly two decades…and instead of seeking a solution to our gun violence epidemic last week, Trump called for the death penalty against the Dayton and El Paso shooters to distract from his own culpability and inaction.
But beyond being a unjust and inhumane policy that has no place in our society (which is enough to abolish it), the death penalty in the United States disproportionately affects people of color to a drastic degree.
Call or email your Representatives and tell them to support and cosponsor the abolishment of federal executions — H.R.4052.
Since 2002, 12 white people have been executed for deaths of black victims while 178 Black people have been executed for deaths of white victims. This gross bias plays out at both the state and federal level.
Even if the racial bias weren’t screaming out at us; the death penalty still needs to go, from an ethical and humane standpoint, for the fact that it doesn’t reduce crime, and for the times we’ve executed the innocent. The death penalty is disappearing around the world.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-OH), part of “the Squad” of four freshmen Congresswomen of color subjected to racist attacks by Trump last month, has introduced the legislation to abolish the state sanctioned executions. And there isn’t much time – the next executions are now slated for January 2020.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Representatives and tell them to support the abolishment of capital punishment — cosponsor H.R.4052.
