Today’s Action: Write a letter to your editor targeting your reps

Your Members of Congress are home through April 9, meeting with constituents and reforming the stances that they’ll take back to D.C.

For the next week and a half, it’s vital we hit up our MoC’s on major issues that need a little more support to cross the finish line. So every day, we’ll be featuring a different way to get your MoC’s attention at the local level! We’ve already tackled scheduling a one-on-one meeting, holding an event at their office, and attending or planning your own Town Hall. Next up…

Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper

Your Members of Congress either have a team or technology that alerts them to every mention of their name in local media. Which means getting your letter published in a local newspaper not only gets your demands out to hundreds-to-thousands-to-millions (depending on the newspaper) of readers, but it also ensures your words are brought to your MoC’s attention…often when they aren’t expecting it.

    • Choose your newspaper. Select a paper that’s published in state for your Senators, and in district for your Representatives. Your reps need to understand that your demands are coming from and being seen by their own voters.

  • Write your letter. Keep it between 100-200 words, and keep out vulgarities and name-calling (though you can think them).

  • Share it! Did you get published? Share the link on social media, and ask your community to do the same!

For more info, tips, and links to major newspapers, check out the OD Action guide to writing a letter to the editor!

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to charge Matt Gaetz with sex trafficking and statutory rape, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
