Today’s Action: Textbank to support statehood for D.C. TODAY!

The House has passed statehood for Washington, D.C. for the second time in history, with Democrats joining in unanimously. Now, the bill moves to the Senate and an uphill battle.

Five Democratic caucusing members of the Senate have yet to co-sponsor the legislation: Joe Manchin (WV), Angus King (ME), Jeanne Shaheen (NH), and Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema (both AZ). But even with all five on board, the only way to pass D.C. statehood – or nearly any Democratic priority in Congress– is also eliminating the Jim Crow filibuster.

It’s time to dig in with urgency if we want to make any use of our narrow Senate majority before midterms risks a shift in who controls Congress.

Call or email your Senators and demand they support statehood for Washington, D.C., including overturning the filibuster to make it happen. Then, sign up for a shift TODAY to textbank voters in states whose Senators need additional convincing on D.C. statehood!

Why is statehood such an urgent matter? Because representation matters.

  • D.C. has a population higher than both Wyoming and Vermont, but no voting representation in Congress. Over 700,000 Americans!
  • D.C. pays more in federal taxes per capita than any state in the country. But without Congressional representation, they have no say in how those taxes are used. It’s taxation without representation…which we fought The Revolutionary War to avoid!
  • The population of the city is 46% Black, which would make it the first plurality-Black state in the nation. The fact that Congressional representation has been long-denied is a major civil rights issue.

Statehood for D.C. is not a new issue…but this is the first time actually achieving it is within reach. However, it won’t happen without major grassroots effort on our part. Time to dust off that 2020 textbanking energy and dive in!

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and urge them to fight hard to pass statehood for D.C., including eliminating the Jim Crow filibuster to pass it. But don’t stop there – sign up for a one-hour textbank shift TODAY to connect with voters in states whose Senators need an extra push!
