Today’s Action: Tell House to condemn police brutality

Reps. Ilhan Omar (MN-5) and Ayanna Pressley (MA-7) have introduced a resolution to condemn police brutality, racial profiling, and the excessive use of force. This sentiment should be a given – every member of Congress needs to sign and then (this is most important) be held accountable to their signature.

But the resolution goes on to call for the creation of policies to back-up these condemnations, and this is even more key. Omar and Pressley want to hold Members of Congress accountable for turning these commitments into law and taking the policies back to their states.

Call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor and pass H.Res.988 to condemn police brutality and recommend adoption of policy reform.

Omar and Pressley’s resolution pins Republicans and Democrats alike on committing to:

  1. Improving oversight and holding independent investigations of law enforcement,
  2. Calling on the Department of Justice to investigate racial profiling, police brutality, violence, and violation of civil rights,
  3. Supporting the establishment of all-civilian, community-driven review boards which can investigate incidents of police misconduct,
  4. Creating unbiased law enforcement policies that proactively reduce police brutality, racial profiling and use of force against Black and Brown people and other historically marginalized communities.

This resolution holds so much of what we need in our communities and what community organizers are calling for. It’s not a final solution – but it is a good start. Congress needs to pass it…and then it’s our job to make sure they follow through on their words.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to co-sponsor and pass H.Res.988 to condemn police brutality and commit to instituting law enforcement policy reform.
