Today’s Action: Pass the Essential Workers Bill of Rights

Yesterday, we shared that the world’s biggest supermarket company, Kroger, is cancelling its $2/hour hazard pay for all employees beginning this Sunday (you may know Kroger under a different name). There’s still time to tweet or send them a message about it.

We *clearly* cannot trust corporations to care for their workers’ best interests during this crisis, and put people over profits. Congress must step in and provide legislation to protect the essential workers who have labored through the stay-at-home mandates and will continue to do so until we have a vaccine that guarantees safety for all.

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA-17) have introduced the Essential Workers Bill of Rights. Call or email your Members of Congress and ask them to support these important protections for our essential workers.

Essential workers are the nearly 60 million healthcare workers, grocery and drug store employees, government employees, food service workers, delivery drivers, farm workers and more – the people keeping us fed and healthy while most of us stay safely at home.

Warren and Khanna’s Essential Workers Bill of Rights includes health and safety protections, liveable wages, collective bargaining agreements, universal paid sick leave and family and medical leave, protections for whistleblowers, corporate accountability, and more. It’s a comprehensive approach to the changes workers have been fighting for since well before this crisis, needs that were life-or-death before this pandemic hit, and policy that is absolutely crucial to seeing our essential workers safely through this time.

Latest projections predict 137,000 U.S. deaths by the beginning of August, and essential workers are some of the most exposed to the risks. This virus isn’t going away anytime soon – we must act now to protect the 60 million facing it head on.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and urge their support of Sen. Warren and Rep. Khanna’s Essential Workers Bill of Rights. Our essential workers deserve our best protection and support.
