Today’s Action: Tell the Biden administration to repeal sanctions on Venezuela!
During the Trump administration, the United States significantly expanded economic sanctions on the Venezuelan government in an effort to further isolate and weaken President Nicolás Maduro. The Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) reported that the sanctions placed on Venezuela “directly contributed to its deep decline, and to the further deterioration of the quality of life of Venezuelans.”
The sanctions have impacted every corner of the country, including imports for essential goods, such as food, medicine, and fuel. Restrictions on propane, for example, caused shortages that forced Venezuelans to cook over makeshift charcoal and wood grills. No matter the intentions, the US government is inflicting harm on the most vulnerable in Venezuela and perpetuating ongoing humanitarian crises. It’s time for our leaders to take the necessary steps to repeal them.
Write President Biden and tell him it’s time to end the Trump-era sanctions on Venezuela!
The findings from WOLA paint a damning picture — military and political elites are largely unaffected by the sanctions, while ordinary Venezuelans bear the brunt of their economic consequences. Leaders in Washington must begin to undo the harm exacted on the Venezuelan people.
David Smilde from WOLA noted that “US policy-makers thought these sanctions were short-term measures that would swiftly lead to a democratic transition. But they have hurt the Venezuelan people more than the government, thereby strengthening Maduro’s hand and creating a deadlock. It’s time for the US to rethink its Venezuela sanctions package.”
Write President Biden and demand he repeal the Trump-era sanctions on Venezuela!
