Today’s Action: Tell the Federal Trade Commission to protect consumers TODAY
There’s a comment period on the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) debate about whether to hold businesses accountable when they steal or defraud consumers. Because right now…they aren’t.
That comment period ends TOMORROW, so time is of the essence.
A Texas company called Your Therapy Source has been caught by the FTC stealing from its workers through wage-fixing (conspiring across industry to set worker wages below standard). Wage-fixing is illegal. But the FTC’s response to this discovery was simply issuing a statement asking the company to stop stealing. No wage compensation, no fines, no jail time. No punishment for corporate law-breakers.
Now, a new member of the FTC, Rohit Chopra, is fighting back for the people. Chopra says the FTC must follow through on the law if we’re to have any chance battling corporate corruption. And the FTC is currently receiving public commentary on the Your Therapy Source case through Thursday, August 30.
And this isn’t the only case in which the FTC has brushed corporate crimes under the rug. In 2001, the FTC charged a company named Speedway with false advertisement of its product, and ordered them to refund $1 million to customers. 15 years later, Speedway still hadn’t completed the task…and the FTC decided to let Speedway pay the government the balance instead of its customers.
With massive pending issues like Facebook’s privacy violations which affect 87 million people worldwide, Chopra believes the FTC must finally begin standing firm if they are to have any success protecting American citizens from corporations run amok…and it begins right now with the Your Therapy Source wage-fixing.
The FTC takes public comments seriously (especially as they receive very few) — so this is a huge change to make a big influence on criminal corporate actions!
