Today’s Action: Tell the Senate no vote on Kavanaugh before an FBI investigation
It comes as little surprise why Professor Christine Blasey Ford did not immediately jump on the GOP’s underhanded ‘offer’ to take her testimony regarding Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s past of sexual assault against her. The rushed two-witness hearing deliberately set up a he said, she said outcome to give the appearance of exonerating Judge Kavanaugh with no investigation.
Now, a second woman, Deborah Ramirez, has come forward, accusing Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, and it is unacceptable for Republicans to dismiss this woman’s brave voice, and rush to confirm *another* man to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court who is capable of such violence against women. We need an investigation.
Ford and Ramirez now face Republicans’ systemic rot of victim-blaming and a general disbelief of women. Ford has received threats of violence and death, similar to former Republican Senate candidate Judge Roy Moore’s accuser whose house was burned down shortly after going public. These public attacks are precisely why most women don’t report their assaults (#WhyIDidntReport).
What we are asking for is reasonable and precedented: an investigation to find the truth behind accusations against a man poised to receive a lifetime seat on the highest court in the land. This is what was done in 1991 when Anita Hill accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment, and the same GOP Senators who called for an investigation then are arguing against it today. (Hill was then disparaged and discredited by the these Republicans.)
The Supreme Court may be the highest court in the land, but it is still not above the law.
