Today’s Action: Tell your Governor to uphold Paris Climate Agreement standards in your state
The United Nations announced earlier this week that we have only twelve years to make enormous worldwide changes — slashing greenhouse gas emissions by 45% — or face the cataclysmic repercussions of global warming.
Change of this nature cannot happen at an individual level and will take top-down immediate government and corporate action in every nation on our fragile planet. This is the goal of the Paris Climate Agreement, a contract between almost 200 nations to enact stringent regulations to battle climate change, which now must be strengthened further due to these new findings.
An agreement that Trump pulled the United States out of last year, a truly horrific short-term financial win for big corporations in the face of flooded cities (Miami, for one), global hunger, and irreparable damage to oceans and wildlife. Once we flip Congress, we can work on battling his huge mistake at a federal level. But until then, we must start the work NOW in our states.
This latest report is nothing short of terrifying and Trump’s response both infuriating and massively destructive.
But there’s hope: statewide action has already begun. In the aftermath of our removal from the Paris Agreement last year, Governors in 16 states (and Puerto Rico) formed the United States Climate Alliance to commit statewide agreement to the Paris regulations.
We need every state in the nation on board — because we can’t wait two more years for another president who’s willing to acknowledge the reality of today. If Trump is going to act as if climate change doesn’t exist, we need to act as if HE doesn’t exist…and go to the Governors who can take action.
