Today’s Action: Stop “Bloody Gina” from becoming CIA director
“I would bring back waterboarding, and I’d bring back a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding.” So said Trump on the campaign trail, in reference to President Obama’s elimination of waterboarding (simulated drowning) as an ‘interrogation’ technique, used frequently during the Bush era.
And now, Trump has nominated Gina Haspel, the person who oversaw the brutal waterboarding of Abu Zubaydah (83 times in three weeks) and countless others during the Bush era, as CIA director.
Despite international condemnation of those CIA “enhanced interrogation” techniques, Trump is sending a clear signal with Haspel’s nomination: bring on the torture. We cannot allow the CIA to be led by such inhumane and intentionally-violent leadership. Call or email your Senators today and demand they reject the nomination of Gina Haspel for CIA director.
What’s more — CIA torture was not only inhumane, it was completely ineffectual, as determined by the Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture.
The GOP has sprung to Haspel’s defense, claiming she was simply following orders during an era that earned her the nickname “Bloody Gina.” In doing so, they invoke the “Nuremberg defense” used by Nazi criminals who committed unspeakable acts of torture and mass murder.
We have a moral and legal obligation to ensure our country does not fall back in our march toward human decency. Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand they block Gina Haspel’s nomination for CIA director. Abu Zubaydah lost an eye under CIA torture. Let us now keep ours open.
