Today’s Action: Phone banking for introverts training session TOMORROW!

Hi there! It’s Sara, Director of Actions for OD Action, and there’s something I want to speak personally on: being a politically-engaged introvert.

I was raised by an extroverted father. The man is happiest when he’s chatting – with anyone! In person, on the phone, with loved ones or strangers. He once visited me here in Los Angeles for four days and made friends with a clerk during his grocery store check out…two years later, upon landing here again, his first request was to visit that store to say hello to his friend.

I am introverted. I have to work up my energy to attend a gathering or party, and I usually duck out early. I have beloved friends, but I mildly dread interactions with strangers and my happiest plane rides are the ones where the only thing I say on the flight is “cranberry juice, please.”

But I do enjoy deep, thoughtful, personal conversations and I am an excellent listener. In fact, at the social gatherings I can’t opt out of (my friends and family have a sneaky system in which they arrange to carpool with me so that I can’t back out), I tend to be found sitting in the corner, intently listening to someone near tears as they share their real troubles, while the happy frolicking moves obliviously around us.

Believe it or not, this actually makes me a perfect fit for phone banking. Because what is more personal than politics? Phone banking is about listening closely and connecting with the person on the other side. At our core, what we all want most is to be heard…and more often than not, Democratic policies respond much better to people’s real needs than Republican platforms. If you can hear what’s really troubling swing or disengaged voters, you can connect the dots to how voting blue this November will actually help them.

Don’t believe me? The good folks of Swing Left San Francisco know it’s true – and they’re holding a virtual training session TOMORROW specifically for introverts who know phone banking is the best way to win this election but have eyeballed it with dread and resistance.

You don’t need to convince yourself to phonebank today. Today, just make the choice to attend the training session and hear their tips and experiences. And it’s a virtual session, so celebrate your introverted self by not leaving your house to attend!

Sign up for Swing Left San Francisco’s virtual Phone Bank Training for Introverts TOMORROW, Saturday, October 10, 4-5:30 pm EST / 1-2:30 pm PST.
