Today’s Action: Overturn the Muslim Ban through legislation

With a historic victory last week in Minnesota, Democrat Ilhan Omar is now primed to win a House seat this November, and become the first Somali-born (a refugee!) member of the House of Representatives. She and Palestinian-born Rashida Tlaib of Michigan’s 13th District are expected to become the first Muslim women ever elected to Congress.

These two women stand boldly in the face of Trump’s anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-refugee agenda. In a 5-4 decision earlier this summer, the Supreme Court affirmed and solidified Trump’s Muslim Ban 3.0. The ban indefinitely halts travel to the U.S. from five Muslim-majority countries (Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen, and Somalia) plus a handful of citizens from Venezuela and North Korea (already banned). Omar’s nomination, a refugee from one of the banned Muslim countries, sends a clear signal to Washington: these are important voices in our communities, and Trump cannot silence them.

With the conservative Supreme Court behind Trump’s policy, we must turn to Congress for the checks and balances our nation so desperately needs and demand legislation overturning this historically oppressive ban.

Trump’s crusade against Muslims is unfounded in reason and fact, spreading rabid hatred for a sweeping category of peoples and countries responsible for exactly zero acts of terror in the United States.

You read that right. Zero people have been killed in America by nationals from the countries in Trump’s ban.

And speaking of violence, three of the affected countries are war-torn…meaning Trump’s ban effectively uses Islamophobia to cut down on refugee assistance (in three conflicts the US has had a hand in exacerbating, no less).

We must stand up for these millions of Muslims – students, professionals, and families just trying to survive – and demand Congress proactively fight Trump’s campaign against Islam by passing legislation to overturn the Travel Ban.
