Iran’s COVID-19 death toll is up to nearly 2000, but could result in 3.5 million deaths. And while our country struggles to gain adequate testing supplies because Trump failed to act in time, Iranians are struggling with accessing basic needs due to Trump’s devastating anti-Obama-legacy sanctions.
Trump stoked war with Iran from the moment he took office. He first blocked travel with his Muslim Ban, then broke Obama’s heralded Iran nuclear deal to impose crippling sanctions on Iran’s economy in May 2018, deeply hurting Iranian citizens in the process.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY-14), and several other representatives have sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to end the sanctions against Iran, so that Iranian citizens may get the supplies they need to beat this virus and recover quickly.

Thanks to US sanctions, the vast majority of Iranians are too poor to survive a quarantine – they must work. And the Iranian government similarly does not have the funding to support the population or the economy through a work-stoppage. Result: no social distancing possible. Meanwhile, medical supplies are not making it through due to these same sanctions. Trump’s response to this bleak outlook? A fresh round of sanctions and a death sentence for millions of Iranians with Trump’s signature.
US sanctions aren’t the only reason coronavirus has spread so quickly in Iran – part of that blame certainly rests on Iranian leaders who (like Trump) initially responded to the crisis by denying it. But Trump’s sanctions were wholly unnecessary and warmongering from the start. And now, they are specifically aiding and abetting COVID-19 as it sweeps Iran.
In the 1990’s, similar US sanctions on Iraq killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children. Are we prepared to participate in a repeat of history now?
