Today’s Action: Stop the FBI from warrantless spying on your browsing history

Last week, the Senate passed a reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act, the vast surveillance program put in place after September 11, which allows the federal government to freely spy on its own citizens. The bill now moves back to the House for final approval.

Under the PATRIOT Act, the FBI can access your internet search and browsing history without a warrant – it’s an unrestrained invasion of privacy, signed away by our leaders years ago and reauthorized regularly. But there’s a bipartisan amendment to remove that ability, which needed 60 in favor to pass but lost in the Senate by a single vote. (It would have passed if any of these 12 Democrat and independents had voted “yea” or been present).

Call or email your Representative and tell them to include and pass the Wyden-Daines amendment, to prohibit warrantless FBI searches of our internet and browsing history, in the reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act. And if your Senator voted NAY or didn’t vote on the amendment, send them your strong feedback.

The PATRIOT Act has provided three administrations with unmitigated access to our personal lives. And these surveillance authorizations have been almost entirely unnecessary and ineffective in their original intention of counter-terrorism efforts.

The Wyden-Daines amendment is close to passing with clear bipartisan support. The House is a more favorable environment to win, with even some Republicans supporting it, but the Senate has shown us that we cannot take anyone’s support for granted without serious pressure.

We must lean hard on the House to pass the Wyden-Daines amendment and protect us from relentless invasion of our private lives.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Representative and tell them to push House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to include and pass the Wyden-Daines amendment of the PATRIOT Act to prohibit the FBI from warrantless searches of our internet and browsing history. If your Senator voted NAY or didn’t vote on the amendment, be sure to express your disapproval.
